The World's First Love Letter

The World's First Love Letter

No matter what era or civilization you go to, love has always existed. No one has been able to escape love; wars have been fought for love, and civilizations have been destroyed. Love is the most powerful and dangerous, yet beautiful emotion in the world. But have you ever wondered who wrote the first love letter and how? What if it was written thousands of years ago in cuneiform? You will also read the first love letter in the continuation of this text. The world's first love letter was found by Professor Hilprecht of the University of Philadelphia during an excavation in the Niffer Valley in Mesopotamia between 1889 and 1900. The artifacts found during this excavation could not be deciphered at the time and were handed over to the Ottoman Empire. However, this document was deciphered about 60 years later by the American Kramer and Muazzez Çığ and translated into Turkish. After this work, which also provides information about the Sumerians, was deciphered, two different legends were told about the artifact. The first is that the poem was written by a priestess in love with the king, and that she met and married the king by chance. The other legend is that the king married a priestess every year to bring fertility to his land. Whatever the story, this poem was eventually composed and sung during festivals, weddings, and celebrations in the palace and among the public. Here is the Turkish translation of the letterMy bridegroom, the beloved of my heart. Your beauty is greater than honey, sweeter than honey. Lion, the precious one of my heart. Your beauty is greater than honey, sweeter than honey. My precious caresses are sweeter than honey. The bedroom is full of honey. Let us enjoy your beauty. Lion, let me caress you. My precious caresses are sweeter than honey. My bridegroom, you enjoyed me. My mother will tell you that she will give you beautiful things. My father will give you gifts. Because you love me. Grant me your caresses. My God, my protector. My Shusin, who pleases the heart of God Ellil. Grant me your caresses.
