Central Europe Trip, Estonia - Tallinn
Tallinn, a port city, is also the capital of Estonia. With a population of 400,000, it is the largest city in Estonia. Having suffered many attacks and invasions throughout its history, Tallinn possesses a rich heritage in terms of history and culture. For this reason, it was included in UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1997.
Tallinn, which leaves a fairy-tale city impression with its towers, houses with pointed roofs of red tiles, and walls, should first be visited at the Old Town. The highest point in Old Tallinn is Toompea, the Government Square. You can climb there and get a panoramic view of the city. The Nevsky Russian Cathedral, located in the Government Square, is one of the most magnificently beautiful historical structures. The crescents you will see under the crosses on top of the church symbolize the victory won by the Russians as a result of their victory over the Ottomans.
While you are in the Old Town, you should walk along the street called Pikk Jalg, meaning "long leg." The 123-meter-high St. Olaf's Church, dating back to the 15th century and one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture, is a must-see. You can visit St. Nicholas' Church, the Dome Church, Niguliste Church, the Town Hall, visit Fat Margaret and Tall Hermann Towers, see the world's oldest pharmacy, and rest and dine at the many restaurants and cafes in the square.
Don't forget to stop by Olde Hanse, a superb restaurant famous for its medieval decoration, and be sure to eat or drink something before you leave.
