Amsterdam, the City of Freedoms and Canals

Amsterdam, the administrative capital of the Netherlands, was founded in the 12th century on the banks of the Amstel River. It also takes its name from this river. In the city, which is also very famous for Dam Square, you will see people on bicycles everywhere. The rights of cyclists are almost superior to those of pedestrians. This is not surprising considering that half of the population uses bicycles. Nicknamed the Venice of the North, Amsterdam has numerous canals, just like Venice. There are approximately 170 canals. The city, which has about 90 islands, also has around 1400 bridges. Singel, Keizersgracht, and Herengracht are among its most famous canals. When you visit, you should not leave without taking a boat tour of the canals. You should also walk through its narrow streets. Damrak Street is very famous for those who want to buy souvenirs. Among the city's most famous squares, which are also very well-known, are Museumplein, where many museums are located; Niewmarkt, with its many cafes and shops; Rembrandplein for entertainment; and Leidseplein, the center of nightlife. The Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum are must-visit attractions. The Waterlooplein Flea Market and the Oudemanhuis Book Market are also places that deserve ample time and a visit.
