What is Umrah?

Umrah is a way of visiting the holy sites, which the Prophet called the lesser Hajj. There are a number of practices to be followed when performing the Umrah visit. Umrah rituals have a specific order. For example, Ihram is entered with 'Niyyah' and 'Talbiyah'. Men wear two pieces of cloth and slippers on their feet. The white garment called Ihram is worn only during the period when the Umrah ritual is performed. Visitors can otherwise move around in normal clothes.

What is Tawaf al-Kaaba?

Tawaf al-Kaaba starts from the corner of Hajar al-Aswad and is performed by circling the Kaaba seven times. It is also performed within the Umrah ritual. Outside of Umrah, Tawaf al-Kaaba can be performed at any desired time. For the Sa'i ritual between Safa and Marwah during Umrah rituals, it starts from Mount Safa and is performed by going to Mount Marwah four times and returning from Mount Marwah to Safa 3 times. Afterwards, one exits Ihram by shortening the hair or shaving the head. Men can cut at least one cm from the ends of their hair or shave their heads completely, and women can also exit Ihram by cutting a little from the ends of their hair. Each of the Umrah rituals we have listed here has a name, but over time, with the collective performance of these rituals, this form of worship has come to be known as the 'Umrah journey'.
